Summer weather is great, but also risky for dogs. Overheating is lurking. Fortunately, there are many ways to keep your dog cool during hot days. These are our top 5 tips.
1. Provide sufficient shade
Create places at home or in the garden where your dog can lie out of the sun. You can also provide a cool spot with a blanket when you are on the road.
2. Place a cooling mat or wet towel
A cooling mat is ideal for indoors. Or put a wet towel down for your dog to lie on – this helps to lower their body temperature.
3. Provide frozen snacks
Put some wet food or yoghurt in a Kong and freeze it. This will keep your dog occupied and cool for longer.
4. Adjust walks
Choose short walks at cool times (see blog 4) and avoid busy, hot places.
5. Monitor your dog's behavior
Overheating can be recognized by lethargy, heavy panting, feeling warm and disorientation. If in doubt, immediately alert the vet.
With these tips you can make sure that your dog stays comfortable and healthy even during hot days. Better prepared = more enjoyment.
